He’s a veteran: Before he became a TV host, Springer served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the 173rd Airborne Brigade and received a Bronze Star for his service.

He’s a lawyer: Springer earned his law degree from Northwestern University in 1968. He practiced law for several years before transitioning into politics and then television.

He’s a former mayor: Springer served as the mayor of Cincinnati, Ohio, from 1977 to 1978. He ran as a Democrat and was elected with over 50 percent of the vote. His tenure as mayor was short-lived, as he resigned after a scandal involving a prostitute.

His talk show almost didn’t happen: When Springer pitched the idea for his talk show to TV executives, they were hesitant to give him a chance. It wasn’t until a Chicago station picked up the show that it gained national attention and became a cultural phenomenon.
