Before Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was elected to public office, he was an actor. Now, you can watch his satire work on Netflix again.
The series Servant of the People follows a teacher (Zelenskyy) who gets elected as president after an impassioned rant against corruption goes viral.
The show ran for 3 seasons and has relatively good reviews. The political satire focused on the struggles of a government outsider trying to make a difference at the highest level.
The show ended when Zelenskyy launched a real life campaign for the position in 2019. There were 39 candidates, but no one candidate had the majority of the votes. Thus, Ukrainian law required a second round of voting between the top candidates where Zelenskyy emerged victorious against the incumbent president, Petro Poroshenko.
The conflict with Russia, over the Crimean peninsula, and separatist violence in the east were a major factor. Consequently, it prevented over 10% of Ukrainians from voting in the election.
