From early March to late April, an unnamed German Red Cross nurse potentially injected nearly 8,600 patients with saline solution that she passed off as being COVID-19 vaccines.
The Lower Saxony State Health Office and the district of Friesland announced on Tuesday that it is possible the nurse drew upwards of 8,557 syringes with only saline. Prior to the announcement, it was assumed that only a small number of people received the saline injections.
According to one of the nurse’s colleagues, the nurse originally confessed to drawing up only six syringes with the saline solution. She justified the initial shots by stating she accidentally dropped a BioNTech vaccine ampule. She was promptly discharged afterwards.
Following the initial incident and the nurse’s discharge, the local authorities announced that, “According to current police findings, there is a risk that the perpetrator has only drawn up a saline solution in the syringes instead of the vaccine in other cases.”
Investigators in the case discovered that the nurse had previously shared posts criticizing the vaccines, as well as the decisions made by the Bundesregierung. This led a special police commissioner for politically-motivated crimes to take over the probe. The nurse is currently staying silent on the matter.
This situation has prompted a follow-up test for those who received the jab and are not showing the proper antibodies that would appear following the vaccination. Those coordinating the follow-up are urging those who feel they may have received the placebo to come forward. This is because the antibody tests are only accurate for a short period.
According to an online statistics portal based in Germany, the rate of those who are eligible for and have received both shots in Lower Saxony is currently at around 55%.
