Brazilian Congressman Eliaz Vaz recently discovered that the Brazilian military had purchased 35,000 Viagra pills for the country’s Air Force and Navy. Vaz said that he utilized the government’s “transparency portal” to obtain the information. The portal is in place to grant the public access to information on government spending.
The same lawmaker who made the discovery also reported that the country’s military had also procured 60 inflatable penis implants. No one from the government has commented on their intended purpose.
According to the Brazilian Navy and Air Force, who collectively made the questionable purchase, the 35,000 erectile dysfunction pills were to be used to treat pulmonary hypertension, a type of high blood pressure.
Brazil’s president, Jair Bolsonaro, was a Captain and a paratrooper prior to his presidency. He is famous for his machismo and has often been heard “boasting about his virility”. Bolsonaro frequently refers to himself as “imbrochável“, which translates roughly into “un-floppable” or “flaccid-proof”.
“We must understand why the Bolsonaro administration is spending public money on buying such large quantities of Viagra,” Congressman Vas said, “The question we ask is: why is the Bolsonaro government spending public money to pay for these prostheses? The Brazilian people struggle to get medicines… and yet a group [of people] is treated with expensive prostheses.”
Vas explained that the 60 “inflatable silicone penile” implants cost between $10,600 to $12,800 each. They were purchased for three separate military hospitals. In total, they cost over $700,000.
Another congressman, Marcelo Freixo, announced that he will be asking the public prosecutor to launch an investigation into the questionable spending. Freixo tweeted, “The Bolsonaro administration dallied over buying Covid vaccines but approved the overpriced purchase of 35,000 Viagra pills for the armed forces.”
Opponents of the president Bolsonaro, demand answers following the congressman Vas’ exposing the military for its purchase of 35,000 Viagra pills.
