Representative Chip Roy, a Republican lawmaker from Texas, has intensified his scrutiny of the DoD by demanding a comprehensive list of all Military Pride Month events.
In a letter addressed to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, Roy has called for transparency and accountability regarding the use of taxpayer dollars to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives during Pride Month.

The letter, sent on Thursday, highlights Roy’s concerns about the allocation of resources and the perceived prioritization of what he views as a “woke ideology” over the primary mission of the military – defending the United States and its interests.
“DoD should be solely focused on mission-critical activities that advance military readiness and lethality to deter and, if necessary, defeat our adversaries,” Roy’s letter states.
Roy’s request for information on every LGBTQ+ observance activity authorized, approved, or encouraged by each DoD service component, including the Guard and Reserve, aims to shed light on the extent of the military’s involvement and assess the impact on military readiness.
This call for transparency follows the recent cancellation of a “child-friendly” drag show scheduled at a Nevada air base, which was originally planned for the first day of Pride Month. The cancelation of the event has drawn the attention of Republican lawmakers, including Roy and Representative Matt Gaetz of Florida, who both expressed their concerns and demanded answers from military leadership.
Roy’s letter asserts that diverting resources away from critical military activities to promote what he perceives as a political agenda is inconsistent with national security interests. He argues that the emphasis on DEI initiatives during Pride Month could erode unity within the service ranks and diminish public confidence in the military.
The DoD has not yet provided a public response to Representative Roy’s demands for information on military-sponsored Pride Month events. However, it is worth noting that the military has increasingly recognized the importance of diversity and inclusivity as integral components of an effective fighting force. Efforts to create a more inclusive environment within the military are seen as crucial in attracting and retaining diverse talent.
