"The introduction of armed automatons by China underscores the need for the U.S. to maintain its technological edge."

A Republican lawmaker has raised alarms over new developments from China, highlighting the emergence of rifle-toting AI robot dogs showcased during military drills in Cambodia. The Chinese military's display, captured in a video from state media and reported by the Military Times, revealed autonomous dog-like robots weighing 110 pounds capable of carrying and firing automatic rifles.

Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-Fla., emphasized the significance of advanced AI as a critical economic and military frontier, noting its implications for both the United States and its rivals like China. In response, Buchanan authored an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which directs the Secretary of Defense to assess the national security threat posed by China's military deployment of AI technologies, including such robotic systems.

"The introduction of armed automatons by China underscores the need for the U.S. to maintain its technological edge," Buchanan told Fox News Digital. Concerns over China's advancements in AI weaponry come amid ongoing debates in Congress over the FY25 NDAA, with the House recently passing its version and the Senate set to begin deliberations soon.

The Pentagon has yet to comment on the matter, although reports indicate that the U.S. Marine Corps has deployed similar robotic quadrupeds for perimeter security. Buchanan stressed the importance of vigilance and proactive measures to ensure U.S. military superiority in the face of technological advancements by global competitors.

Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Ala., echoed these concerns, emphasizing the need for continued investment in innovative technologies like AI to maintain U.S. military dominance.

The debate over the NDAA reflects bipartisan consensus on the urgency of addressing AI-related threats posed by China and other adversaries, positioning technological innovation as pivotal to national defense strategies moving forward.
