Multiple sources have confirmed that Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has left the country.

Abdullah Abdullah, is the head of the Afghan National Reconciliation Council. He recently stated, “The former president of Afghanistan left Afghanistan, leaving the country in this difficult situation.” Abdullah also said, “God should hold him accountable.”

Ghani was first elected in 2014 and five years later was later re-elected for a second term. Suhail Shaheen, a Taliban spokesman, stated the insurgents are “awaiting a peaceful transfer of Kabul city.”

Although, the Taliban has given no details as to what the transition will look like. American personnel are still scrambling to evacuate, and have reportedly been seen burning documents.

It is important to note the American taxpayers spent over $88 billion dollars to arm and train the Afghan Army, and police force, since 2002. They crumbled in under a month in the face of combat with the Taliban.

Many have drawn comparisons to the fall of Saigon. In both conflict the American military never lost a battle, and attempted to build up the host nation. Furthermore, both conflicts ended with a hasty departure while the standing government collapsed.

This has prompted many Veterans to ask the question, “What was it all for?”
