A palliative care nurse in Germany has been sentenced to life in prison after he was convicted of murdering 10 patients and attempting to murder 27 others.
Prosecutors alleged that the man, who has not been publicly named, injected his mostly elderly patients with painkillers or sedatives to ease his workload during overnight shifts. The offences were committed between December 2023 and May 2024 in a hospital in Wuerselen, in western Germany.

Investigators are now examining several other suspicious cases from his career. According to Agence France-Presse (AFP), the man had been employed at the Wuerselen hospital since 2020 after completing nursing training in 2007.
Prosecutors told a court in Aachen that he showed “irritation” and a lack of empathy toward patients requiring higher levels of care, accusing him of acting as a self-appointed “master of life and death.” The court heard that he injected large doses of morphine and midazolam, a sedative, to reduce his workload during night shifts. He was arrested in 2024.
When handing down the life sentence, the court said the crimes carried a “particular severity of guilt,” a designation that typically prevents early release after 15 years. He will still be able to appeal the verdict.
Prosecutors also told AFP that exhumations are underway to identify further potential victims a development that could lead to additional trials.
The case has drawn comparisons to that of former nurse Niels Högel, who received a life sentence in 2019 for murdering 85 patients at two hospitals in northern Germany. Högel was found to have administered lethal doses of heart medication between 1999 and 2005 and is believed to be the most prolific killer in Germany’s modern history.

This disturbing case underscores the critical importance of oversight, accountability, and transparency within healthcare systems. While the vast majority of medical professionals uphold their duty to protect and heal, rare breaches of trust like this remind us why rigorous safeguards are essential to ensure patient safety especially for society’s most vulnerable.
