Iraqi PM survives drone assassination attempt
Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi was recently the target of an assassination attempt. A commercial drone, laden with explosives, wounded six of Kadhimi’s guards. The injuries occurred outside his home in the fortified Green Zone of Baghdad.
Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi was recently the target of an assassination attempt. 2 other drones were shot down by security forces before they could reach the residence. Investigators believe the drones may have been launched from a nearby bridge. Kadhimi was uninjured, and asked for “calm and restraint from everyone.”
An anonymous security official told Reuters, “It’s premature now to say who carried out the attack.”

Adding, “We’re checking our intelligence reports and waiting for initial investigation results to point the finger at perpetrators.”
Iraqi President Barham Salih condemned the attacks on Twitter. Stating, “We cannot accept that Iraq will be dragged into chaos and a coup against its constitutional system.”
President Salih nominated Kadhimi for the role of Prime Minister in 2020.
The Iraqi Prime Minister Office’s Facebook stated Kadhimi received multiple calls offering solidarity following the drone attack. Many of these calls came from diplomats, and other word leaders, offering personal messages for Kadhimi.
The calls were reportedly focused on condemning the drone attack, and offering various forms of assistance to find those responsible.
