The US has deployed a Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missile defense system and 100 troops to Israel to bolster its air defenses amid escalating tensions with Iran.

The Pentagon announced Sunday that President Joe Biden has directed the deployment of a Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missile defense system and 100 troops to Israel. This move aims to bolster Israel's air defenses following Iran's recent attacks.

Pentagon Press Secretary Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder stated the THAAD system will augment Israel's existing air defense system, targeted by Iran on April 13 and October 1. This deployment is part of broader adjustments to protect Americans and defend Israel against Iran and Iranian-aligned militias.

The THAAD system protects against ballistic missile threats, such as Iran's recent attack. Its deployment could enhance Israel's defense if Iran responds to Israel's expected retaliation.

This is not the first U.S. THAAD deployment to the region. Last year, the President directed deployment to the Middle East after October 7th attacks. A THAAD battery was also deployed to Israel in 2019 for training.

President Biden stated, "To defend Israel," regarding the deployment. The 100 troops will operate the THAAD system, a rare but typical move.

Escalating Middle East tensions highlight the U.S. commitment to regional security and defense.

A U.S. Army armored force faced Ukrainian drone operators during the Combined Resolve exercise in Germany this spring, and the results exposed how difficult it can be for conventional armored formations to survive in a battlefield dominated by reconnaissance and FPV drones.
