Republicans defend federal programs to blame Democrats for the ongoing shutdown. Despite historically being critical of government spending.

As the government shutdown continues, Republicans are now defending the same federal programs they often criticize, while blaming Democrats for the crisis.

Many Republican leaders warned that the shutdown is hurting families, disaster response teams, and government services.

Speaker Mike Johnson said the shutdown affects “women, infants, and children who rely on food programs,” and limits FEMA’s ability to help during hurricane season.

Critics quickly pointed out that Johnson had earlier supported cutting nutrition programs. Also, that former President Trump had reduced FEMA’s funding during his term.

Now, Republicans are emphasizing how important federal programs are, hoping to pressure Democrats to end the shutdown. Representative Tom Emmer said, “Our veterans, military, TSA agents, women, infants, and children are all being affected.”

Not all Republicans agree, though. Former President Trump said he wants to use the shutdown to fire government employees and reduce programs supported by Democrats.

Senator Richard Blumenthal from Connecticut said, “They’re suddenly worried about people being fired, even though they’ve already fired so many.”

Vice President JD Vance also said the shutdown is causing serious harm. “Our troops need to be paid, flights need to stay safe, and families need food,” he said.

Representative Chip Roy of Texas was upset about furloughing workers who inspect meatpacking plants. “Local American beef is essential,” he said.

This shift is surprising because, in the past, Democrats were the ones defending government services, while Republicans called them wasteful. Now, the roles seem reversed.

Republican Representative Tim Walberg said, “The Democrat-demanded shutdown is disrupting important government work.” But earlier, he had called for eliminating the Department of Education.

Democrats said Republicans are being hypocritical. “It’s likely just political talk,” said Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries. “They’re defending programs they helped shut down.”

Democrats still refuse to pass a short-term spending bill that does not include more healthcare funding. They argue that Republicans are trying to force them into a bad deal.

Senator Ted Cruz predicted that Democrats would eventually give in. “I can’t wait to see them argue among themselves when government workers start losing their jobs,” he said.

Budget officials are preparing for more layoffs. Speaker Johnson said Office of Management and Budget head Russell Vought “takes no pleasure” in the cuts, but Senator Mike Lee joked that Vought “has dreamed of cutting government since he was a kid.”

President Trump even shared a video showing Vought as the Grim Reaper cutting through the federal government.

One of the biggest concerns is the possible halt of the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program, which helps millions of low-income families. Senator John Thune said, “Democrats will be responsible if funding for food aid stops.”

Ironically, the same Republican-led administration had recently suggested cutting food assistance programs.

As politicians argue, millions of Americans are facing the real impact of the shutdown. Workers are unpaid, and families are uncertain about their benefits.

In times like these, people are reminded of the importance of being prepared — whether financially or personally.
