Peace talks are scheduled for today between Russia and Ukrainian in Belarus near the Ukrainian border. Both side have signaled that they are ready for these peace talks but appear to still be a long way away from agreeing on terms.

According to a top Ukrainian official, Russia and Ukraine have agreed to create safe humanitarian corridors to allow civilians to avoid the fighting.

Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky urged that “It’s necessary to at least stop bombing people. Just stop the bombing and then sit down at the negotiating table.”

Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak said, “That is, not everywhere, but only in those places where the humanitarian corridors themselves will be located, it will be possible to cease fire for the duration of the evacuation,” he said.

Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov stated “We are ready to conduct talks, but we will continue the [invasion] because we won’t allow Ukraine to preserve a military infrastructure that threatens Russia.”

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba has confirmed that Ukrainian diplomats would be available for peace talks in spite of Russia’s refusal to pause their attacks.

Peace talks stall while a region suffers

Meanwhile, Russia is urging citizens of Kyiv to evacuate as their 40 mile military convoy from Belarus closing in on the capital city. Kyiv has managed to stave of Russian assaults up to this point, but Russia has intensified their attacks as we approach the start of a second week of fighting.

Kherson has fallen under Russian control in spite of the city’s mayor posting yesterday on Facebook simply stating, “We are still Ukraine. Still firm.” Now, the mayor is urging his citizens to comply with conditions established by Russian occupiers to “keep the Ukrainian flag flying”.

These conditions include limiting traffic to slow moving vehicles carrying medical supplies or food, adhering to a curfew from 8:00 PM to 6:00 AM, and restricting foot traffic to group of no more than two persons.

While peace talks are scheduled for today, Russia reminds the world that the nuclear option is not off the table. Lavrov stated that while Russia has no plans to start a nuclear war, if the conflict escalated to a third World War, nuclear weapons would be used.
