First responders have some of the most challenging jobs out there. Massif responded to an unmet demand with innovation and knowhow to create some of the best flame resistant (FR) clothing on the first responder market.

One of the founders of Massif, Randy Benham, was a Search and Rescue (SAR) crew member in Grand Teton National Park. Benham realized that the best FR clothing on the market “lacked the characteristics of high-performance outdoor apparel: stretch, breathability, moisture management, and inclement weather protection.”

Benham, “unwilling to accept the existing trade-off between comfortable, high-performance personal gear, and the uncomfortable protective gear designed to protect against injuries from flash fires,” partnered with Antex, a Los Angeles based, specialized knitting mill.

Through this collaboration, they developed and rolled out FR textiles, the like have never before been seen. Their efforts not only produced the highest level of heat protection, but also the most comfortable quality outdoor apparel available.

Massif went from serving the SAR and Firefighter Communities to every branch of the military and several specialized organizations.

“Most fabrics are made of combustible materials (such as cotton, nylon, and polyester) and will ignite when exposed to a flame. A flame hazard may be short-lived, but if your clothes catch on fire, the potential for burn injuries is exacerbated. Thus, the most important defining characteristic of an FR fabric is that it doesn’t support combustion – meaning that, at least, it won’t add to a burn injury; and, in many cases, will protect the user from getting burned by creating a thermal barrier between a flame hazard and the skin.”

However, Massif did not stop there. They have invested tens of millions of dollars, and countless hours of research and development since 1999, to create the most versatile, durable, comfortable, and high performing FR tactical clothing ever made. Their commitment to the men and women who perform some of the worlds most dangerous jobs is unrelenting and unyielding.
