Christopher Castillo was sentenced to five years in prison after pleading guilty to robbing a bank during his first date in Massachusetts while his unsuspecting date, who drove the car, faced no charges.

A woman in Massachusetts unknowingly became a getaway driver after a man she met on a dating app robbed a bank during their first date, and the suspect, Christopher Castillo, has now pleaded guilty and been sentenced, authorities said.

According to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office, Castillo admitted to armed robbery and three counts of assault and battery on a police officer stemming from the incident in Dec. 5, 2016. He received three years in state prison for the robbery and an additional two years in the Bristol County House of Corrections for violently struggling with and spitting on officers who tried to subdue him.

The woman, whose name was not released, was not charged.

She told police she had picked Castillo up at his parents’ home in Chepachet and drove about 30 minutes toward North Attleboro. During the drive, she said, Castillo drank wine in the passenger seat. As they approached a bank, he told her to pull over, got out, and returned minutes later sweating and carrying sunglasses, a hat, a gun and $1,000 in cash. He allegedly told her to drive, prompting her to panic and comply.

Prosecutors said Castillo had entered a branch of Bristol County Savings Bank, displayed a gun to a teller, demanded $1,000 and said he needed the money because he was “really hurting.” After receiving the cash, he ran back to the car and ordered the woman to flee.

She initially drove off but pulled over once she noticed police sirens behind them and exited the vehicle. Officers from the North Attleboro Police then removed Castillo from the car after he ducked inside and resisted arrest. Authorities said he struggled violently, spat at officers and claimed his gun was not loaded.

A search of the vehicle uncovered a .44-caliber handgun described as an antique belonging to Castillo’s stepfather, along with a hat and sunglasses matching the suspect description. Police also recovered the $1,000 from Castillo’s wallet.

Years after what prosecutors described as the incident, Castillo ultimately received a total five-year incarceration sentence, while the woman involved faced no charges.
