More than 400,000 KitKat bars were stolen in a major cargo heist in Europe during transit from Italy to Poland.

More than 400,000 KitKat chocolate bars, with a combined weight of around 12 tons, have been stolen from a delivery truck in Europe in a large-scale cargo theft.

The shipment, produced by Nestlé, was en route from a factory in central Italy to Poland when it was taken, according to a statement from KitKat.

“The vehicle along with its cargo has not yet been recovered, and investigations are continuing in coordination with authorities and logistics partners,” the company said.

In total, 413,793 KitKat bars were reported missing. The company added that each bar can be identified through batch numbers printed on the packaging and urged the public to report any matching products.

The statement also referred to findings from a joint study by the International Union of Marine Insurance and the Transported Asset Protection Association, which highlighted a growing trend of increasingly sophisticated cargo theft and freight fraud.

“We’ve always told people to take a break with KITKAT, but it seems the thieves interpreted that quite literally, making off with more than 12 tons of chocolate,” a spokesperson said.

“While we can acknowledge their taste, cargo theft remains a serious and rising concern for businesses of all sizes,” the spokesperson added.

In an Instagram update posted Sunday, KitKat assured customers that the incident poses no risk to consumer safety and that product availability remains unaffected.

The theft comes amid a series of similar incidents. In July 2023, Joby Pool received an 18-month prison sentence for stealing around 200,000 Cadbury Creme Eggs.

According to PA Media, Pool broke into an industrial site and used a stolen truck to transport the goods. The chocolate eggs, filled with a fondant center designed to resemble a yolk, are especially popular in the UK during the Easter period.

Editor’s Note:

The large-scale theft of KitKat products highlights the growing challenge of cargo crime across Europe, as supply chains between countries like Italy and Poland face increasingly sophisticated threats.
