Deadly Attacks on Churches, Synagogues, and Police Station in Russia's North Caucasus

Staff Writer

Gunmen attacked churches, synagogues, and a police station in Russia's North Caucasus, resulting in at least 20 deaths and multiple injuries, with no immediate claim of responsibility from extremist groups.

At least 20 people were killed, including civilians and police officers, in a series of coordinated attacks on Orthodox churches, synagogues, and a police station in Russia’s North Caucasus region of Daghestan. Gunmen opened fire in the cities of Derbent and Makhachkala on June 23, resulting in extensive casualties and injuries, according to Russian officials. The attacks targeted multiple religious and law enforcement sites, marking a tragic escalation in violence in the volatile region.

Investigators initially reported four civilian deaths, alongside the loss of 15 police officers during the assaults. Among the victims was Father Nikolai, a 66-year-old clergy member with over four decades of service at an Orthodox church in Derbent, confirmed Regional Governor Sergei Melikov in a video statement posted on Telegram early on June 24. Security forces swiftly responded, "liquidating" six assailants involved in the attacks, as declared by Russia’s National Anti-Terrorism Committee, which announced the conclusion of the security operation by the morning of June 24.

Authorities detained Magomed Omarov, the local United Russia party branch secretary, and head of the central Sergokala district, following a search of his residence. United Russia subsequently expelled Omarov for actions discrediting the organization. Three of the attackers killed during the operations were identified, including two of Omarov’s sons and one nephew, according to Interfax.

The assaults occurred on a religious holiday observed by the Russian Orthodox Church, adding a solemn dimension to the tragic events. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attacks from any extremist groups, including the Islamic State (IS), which orchestrated a deadly concert hall shooting in Moscow just three months prior, claiming 145 lives.

"This is a day of tragedy for Daghestan and the whole country," remarked Governor Melikov, announcing three days of mourning for the region in response to the violence. The attacks also resulted in significant damage to religious sites, with synagogues in both Derbent and Makhachkala reportedly catching fire during the assaults, according to Boruch Gorin, chairman of Russia’s Federation of Jewish Communities.

Makhachkala, the capital of Daghestan, witnessed an attack on a police station, adding to the day's chaos and casualties. The region has seen previous incidents of anti-Jewish sentiment, notably in October when a mob targeted an airport following the arrival of a flight from Israel, underscoring underlying tensions.

In March, the Crocus City Hall concert venue near Moscow suffered a devastating attack claimed by an IS affiliate, resulting in Russia’s worst terrorist incident in two decades. The subsequent arrest of individuals suspected of financing and arming the perpetrators highlighted ongoing security challenges across the country.

The recent violence in Daghestan serves as a stark reminder of the persistent threat posed by extremism in Russia’s North Caucasus region, prompting heightened security measures and widespread condemnation both locally and internationally.
