Iran Claims It Captured a U.S. Submarine Drone in Hormuz
Iran says it has captured a U.S. underwater military drone near the Strait of Hormuz, but Washington says the unmanned vessel had already malfunctioned and was effectively out of action before Iranian forces recovered it.

The incident unfolded Tuesday, September 8, at one of the world's most heavily contested maritime chokepoints, where U.S. and Iranian forces are already locked in a rapidly escalating confrontation.
Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said its naval forces seized the American autonomous submarine during what it described as a complex intelligence and operational mission at the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz.

Iranian state media identified the vessel as an American-made Dive-LD and portrayed the capture as a major intelligence success, describing the craft as one of the most advanced unmanned submarines operated by the U.S. military.
The Pentagon's version was considerably less dramatic.
A U.S. military spokesperson said an underwater drone had malfunctioned more than a day earlier while surveying regional waters. Washington said the craft was an older model and did not contain classified sonar or radar systems or sensitive data.
Anduril, the California defense company that developed the Dive-LD, has described the platform as an autonomous underwater vehicle designed for dangerous missions that can include seabed mapping, mine countermeasures and inspection of underwater infrastructure.
The 19-foot vehicle can reportedly operate autonomously for up to 10 days and reach depths of roughly 6,000 meters, making it a powerful example of how unmanned systems are changing naval warfare.
That technology is particularly valuable around Hormuz.
The narrow waterway is a critical route for global energy shipments, and the current U.S.-Iran conflict has already sharply reduced commercial traffic through the strait. With both sides using missiles, drones and naval forces, underwater surveillance can provide information without putting sailors directly into dangerous waters.
For Iran, displaying the captured drone also carries a propaganda value. Tehran can present the recovery as evidence that American technology operating near Iranian waters is vulnerable.
For Washington, emphasizing that the vehicle was old, malfunctioning and carrying no sensitive technology sends the opposite message: Iran may have recovered an American platform, but it did not obtain a major intelligence prize.
The timing makes the incident even more significant.
On the same day, the U.S. military announced that it had destroyed five Iranian oil tankers after Iran's Revolutionary Guards targeted a U.S. Navy warship with ballistic missiles. Iran subsequently launched missiles toward U.S. targets in Jordan, while tensions around Hormuz continued to intensify.
The underwater drone may therefore be only a small piece of a much larger confrontation.
But it highlights something increasingly important in modern warfare: the next naval battle may not always begin with warships firing at each other. Sometimes, it may begin with machines silently moving beneath the surface, gathering information, mapping the seabed and hunting for threats.
