On the morning of July 1, professional urban climbers Angela Nikolau, 33, and Ivan Beerkus (Ivan Kuznetsov), 32, secretly made their way to the top of the 1,454-foot Empire State Building in New York City. According to investigators, the pair hid inside the building overnight before accessing a restricted maintenance area leading to the broadcast antenna.
High above Manhattan, the couple unfurled a banner reading, "When the power of love beats the love of power, the world knows peace."
Then came the surprise.
As helicopters circled overhead and stunned onlookers watched from the streets below, Ivan got down on one knee and proposed.
Angela said yes.
The pair embraced, took selfies, and celebrated on a platform hundreds of feet above the city's observation deck. Videos of the proposal quickly spread across social media, with many calling it the most daring engagement of the year.
If you've followed this far, here's the part that actually matters.
The romance ended where reality began.
Because the antenna was still transmitting, police had to wait until engineers powered it down before emergency officers could safely reach the couple. Once they descended, both were arrested without incident and charged with burglary, reckless endangerment, criminal trespass, and other offenses.
Fortunately, no one was injured, and Empire State Building officials confirmed the public was never in immediate danger.
The couple is no stranger to extreme heights. They gained international attention through the 2024 Netflix documentary Skywalkers: A Love Story, which followed their death-defying climbs around the world. But authorities say this latest stunt crossed a legal line, regardless of the romantic ending.
For many online, the proposal was breathtaking.
For New York police, it was a dangerous rescue waiting to happen.
Editor's Note
It's easy to admire courage when watching from a screen.
But extreme stunts on skyscrapers leave no room for mistakes. One slip, one equipment failure, or one unexpected gust of wind can turn a viral moment into a fatal tragedy.
Sometimes the greatest act of love isn't risking your life for a memorable proposal. It's making sure you're both alive to celebrate it.
