Two Paris surgeons were charged and suspended after a 65-year-old businessman died of a heart attack during a penis enlargement procedure in 2019.

Two plastic surgeons in Paris are facing charges after a 65-year-old patient died during a penis enlargement procedure at a private clinic in 2019.

Ehud Arye Laniado, a Belgian-Israeli businessman and owner of Omega Diamonds, suffered a fatal heart attack while receiving penis enlargement injections at the Saint-Honoré-Ponthieu clinic on March 2, 2019, according to reports from Le Parisien cited by the Toronto Sun. Emergency services were first called to the clinic around 8 p.m. after Laniado complained of stomach pains. One defendant claimed the call was made at Laniado’s request and said the patient chose to continue with the procedure.

Two hours later, emergency responders were called again after Laniado suffered a heart attack. An autopsy later determined the cause of death to be cardiac hypertrophy.

Prosecutors initially sought to charge the primary surgeon, identified only as Guy H., with manslaughter. However, the charges were later revised to failure to assist a person in danger, drug offenses and practicing medicine without a license.

An assistant surgeon, who was allegedly standing in for Guy H. During the procedure, was not registered with the French Medical Association despite reportedly working in France for more than 20 years, according to the outlets. The assistant has not been publicly named.

A source close to the case told Le Parisien, “It’s easy to say in hindsight that the heart attack started (at the 8 p.m. call), but since the patient had an ulcer, it was impossible to consider a heart problem, and emergency services wouldn’t have been called out for such a minor issue.” A judicial source also told the publication that the penis injection was quickly ruled out as the cause of death.

Investigators found that Laniado had been taking several substances banned in France, along with medications used to treat erectile dysfunction.

Both doctors, who are in their 70s, have been suspended from practicing. Guy H. Received a 15-month suspension, while the assistant surgeon was suspended for 12 months. They were also fined €50,000 ($59,000 USD) and €20,000 ($24,000 USD), respectively.

PEOPLE magazine reported that it reached out to Omega Diamonds and the Saint-Honoré-Ponthieu clinic on Feb. 2 but did not receive a response.
