PENTAGON'S DELAY SPARKS SPECULATION ON TROOP PAY BOOST AMID FAMILY SEPARATION

Staff Writer

The Pentagon has not decided to increase the Family Separation Allowance (FSA) monthly, despite growing dissatisfaction and uncertainty. This follows the National Defense Authorization Act's mandate for an examination of military compensation, including FSA, and is expected to provide a conclusive report by 2024.

The defense official emphasized that the Pentagon has the flexibility to adjust payment levels
based on the department's needs and other conditions. However, specific details on what factors
are hindering the proposed hike in payments were not provided. The ongoing military
compensation review, known as the Quadrennial Review of Military Compensation, is expected
to shape recommendations for potential adjustments, but no assurances were given regarding an
FSA increase.

The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), enacted after modifications from its initial
version passed by the House, initially called for a direct raise in the Family Separation
Allowance (FSA) to $400. However, the ultimate version introduced a variable range, causing
bewilderment and dissatisfaction among military personnel and their families.

Congressman Tony Gonzales, who initially proposed the NDAA provision, affirmed his
dedication to urging the Pentagon for an enhancement in FSA. He underscores the significance
of enhancing the quality of life for military families.

The delay in addressing what seems like a minor point of service member compensation comes
at a critical time for the Defense Department. With challenges in meeting recruiting goals,
military branches are facing stiff competition with the private sector for talent. In response,
significant enlistment bonuses have been offered, with the Navy increasing its maximum bonus
to $140,000 in a bid to attract highly qualified recruits.

The delay in FSA adjustments, there is a broader conversation about the overall compensation
and support provided to military families, particularly during times of family separation. The
ongoing compensation review will play a pivotal role in shaping the future landscape of these
allowances, but for now, the uncertainty lingers for service members and their families awaiting
potential improvements in the Family Separation Allowance.
