Russian commander predicts Ukraine victory

Staff Writer

Former Russian commander Igor Girkin has warned that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s forces fighting in Ukraine are on the brink of a devastating defeat.

Putin launched a “special military operation” against Ukraine in February 2022, with the aim of a quick victory against the Eastern European nation. However, Ukraine’s strong defense effort, bolstered by Western aid, has blunted Russian military gains. Combat remains concentrated in the easternmost regions of Ukraine, and analysts say that Russia’s winter offenses have largely failed.

Girkin, a self-described Russian nationalist, rose to prominence during Moscow’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and has been charged with war crimes in Ukraine. While he supports the goals of the invasion, he has become increasingly critical of Kremlin leadership for not sufficiently equipping troops. He accused Russian state media of “polishing” the situation in Ukraine and lamented on how the lack of true information about the situation in Ukraine has affected Russia.

Girkin pointed out that the Russian military was “totally unprepared” for the “long, protracted war” and criticized Russian authorities for legally classifying the invasion as a “special military operation,” rather than a war, which he says limits soldiers’ capacity in Ukraine.

According to the former Russian commander, Putin’s military has been hampered by a range of problems, including chronic underfunding and a lack of investment in modernizing its equipment. Many of Russia’s weapons systems are outdated and obsolete, leaving its soldiers ill-equipped to face modern, technologically advanced adversaries. The former commander also pointed to a lack of training and morale among troops, with many soldiers demoralized by years of neglect and mismanagement.

Despite these challenges, Putin has continued to pursue an aggressive foreign policy, seeking to expand Russia’s influence and undermine Western democracies. The former commander warned that this strategy was likely to backfire, with Russia increasingly isolated on the world stage and facing mounting opposition from its neighbors.

The warning comes as Russia faces a range of challenges, including a sluggish economy, growing social unrest, and increasing international pressure. With the country facing mounting problems on multiple fronts, the former commander’s warning is likely to add to concerns about the stability of Putin’s regime and the risk of further conflict.

Despite the warnings, however, Putin has shown little sign of backing down, and his forces continue to prepare for a possible conflict with Ukraine and other neighboring states. Whether Russia can overcome its myriad challenges and emerge as a major military power remains to be seen, but the former commander’s warning is a stark reminder of the risks and challenges facing Putin’s regime.
