An defense analyst for the UK reported to BBC that this intensified Ukrainian resistance might end up forcing Russia to re-think their strategy. A spokesperson from the United States reported that the Ukrainian resistance was “reversing battlefield momentum.”

Ukrainian forces have gone from mounting a strong resistance to launching devastating counter attacks of their own. The Ukrainian resistance has actually managed to take ground back from Russian invaders. Ukrainian authorities from Makariv, a town west of Kyiv, reported that “Ukrainian flags were flying there once more.”

Reports indicate that Ukrainian flags have been raised in some areas which had previously been under Russian control.

According to a tweet by the UK Ministry of Defense, Russian forces are likely attempting to “envelop Ukrainian forces in the east of the country.” They also speculate that “Russian forces are likely reorganizing before resuming large-scale offensive operations.”

David Petraeus, former CIA Director and Commander of US and ISAF Forces in Afghanistan, has attributed Russia’s “abysmal performance” to many factors, most of which stemming from a lack of professionalism in their military.

Petraeus said that Russia is “fighting against a very determined, quite capable Ukrainian force that is composed of special ops, conventional forces, territorial forces and even private citizens, all of whom are determined not to allow Russia to achieve its objectives.”

The former general added, “They [Russia] clearly have very poor standards when it comes to performing basic tactical tasks such as achieving combined arms operations, involving armor, infantry, engineers, artillery and mortars.” He added, “They are very poor at maintaining their vehicles and weapon systems and have abandoned many of them. They are also poor at resupply and logistical tasks.”

The Ukrainian resistance has also been bolstered by “thousands of U.S.-made Javelin and Stinger missiles pulled from European and American stockpiles” sent to Ukraine.

While Russia’s military shortcomings may ostensibly seem like good news for Ukraine, it may also bring Russia closer to utilizing chemical options.

President Donald Trump has publicly put a specific number on North Korea's nuclear arsenal, saying Kim Jong Un's regime possesses 57 “very powerful” nuclear weapons.
