Russian forces unleashed a barrage of 45 drones over Ukraine on Sunday, marking a distressing milestone as the conflict between the two nations enters its third year.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, amidst the ongoing reshuffling of his war cabinet, revealed that the Iranian-made Shahed drones targeted various regions, including the outskirts of the capital, Kyiv.

The Ukrainian air force swiftly responded, successfully downing 40 of the drones across nine different areas. The attack, lasting five and a half hours, specifically targeted agricultural facilities and coastal infrastructure, causing damage and injuries. In the Mykolaiv region, one person was injured, leading to a fire and damage to residential buildings. Additionally, a blaze broke out in Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk region due to falling debris from a destroyed drone, resulting in another person being injured.

Border police in Moldova reported finding fragments of a “Shahed-type drone” near the southern town of Etulia, close to the Ukrainian border. While authorities suspect the debris may be from a drone shot down by Ukrainian anti-aircraft systems during overnight attacks on Ukraine’s Izmail region, they assured no immediate danger to nearby communities.

The discovery of drone debris in Moldova has prompted Moldovan President Maia Sandu to emphasize the proximity of Russia’s war on Ukraine to Moldova. She stated on social media, “Russia’s aggression endangers the entire continent. Support for Ukraine must continue.”

Amidst these developments, President Zelenskyy continues to shake up military commanders in a bid to sustain momentum against Russian forces. The appointment of Lt. Gen. Alexander Pavlyuk as the new commander of Ukraine’s ground forces and other key military positions reflects the ongoing efforts to bolster the country’s defensive capabilities.

Ukraine’s military intelligence service raised concerns about attacking Russian forces using Starlink terminals to aid their assault. A recording of an intercepted conversation between two Russian soldiers was released as evidence. Despite Space X’s statement on not doing business with the Russian government or its military, reports of Russian troops using Starlink on the front line have surfaced, adding a new dimension to the conflict.

President Zelenskyy, in a statement on Telegram, expressed his intention to “reboot” the upper levels of Ukraine’s armed forces with experienced combat commanders. As Kyiv faces a largely defensive position, the focus remains on improving troop rotation and leveraging new technology to counter the ongoing threat posed by Russian forces.
