Ukraine president fires top military commander

Staff Writer

On February 26th, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy issued a one-line decree firing the commander of Ukraine’s joint forces, General Eduard Moskalyov, without giving any clear explanation.

Moskalyov was leading and overseeing the fight against the Russian invasion in the war-torn eastern region of the country (Donbas region) since his appointment in March 2022. He is widely regarded as a skilled and experienced leader who has played a key role in the country’s efforts to modernize and strengthen its defense capabilities.

The decision to remove Moskalyov from his post was announced in a brief statement from the president’s office, which did not provide any specific reasons for the move.

The statement simply stated, “To dismiss Eduard Moskalyov from the position of commander of the United forces”.

Interestingly, on Friday, while addressing the public, Zelenskiy was heard mentioning Moskalyov while listing the commanders he had been in contact with.

However, his sudden and unexpected dismissal was not mentioned on any of the social media accounts of the Joint Forces and hence no explanation for his removal has been given yet.

The lack of explanation has raised concerns among some observers, who fear that the move may be politically motivated. Ukraine has been grappling with political instability and corruption for years, and the military has been seen as a bastion of professionalism and impartiality.

The move has also sparked concerns among military officials, who fear that the dismissal of a top commander could disrupt ongoing operations and undermine morale among troops, resisting the Russian troops in Donbas region.

“General Moskalyov dismissal without any clear explanation is deeply concerning,” said a senior naval official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. “We need stability and continuity in our leadership, especially in times of geopolitical instability.”

The dismissal of Moskalyov comes at a critical time for Ukraine, as the country continues to grapple with ongoing tensions with Russia and the annexation of Crimea. As Ukraine continues to navigate the challenges of conflict and political instability, the decision to dismiss a top military commander without any clear explanation raises questions about the country’s commitment to professionalism and impartiality.
