In a move aimed at enhancing its military operations, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has announced that it is utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) technology to hunt down Hamas terrorists and protect against the perceived threat posed by Iran.

According to reports, the IDF integrated AI into its operations earlier this year, resulting in significant success in identifying targets. During a 10-day operation, the IDF successfully targeted at least two Hamas commanders and identified 200 new target assets. The operation was described as “the first digital war,” with IDF officers updating the AI systems 150 times during the 10-day operation.

However, the IDF’s embrace of AI technology has also raised concerns from researchers at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, who have labelled the rush to adopt AI technology as “premature.” One of the main concerns cited by the researchers is the lack of clarity around how AI reaches its conclusions and how the IDF acts upon them. There are also concerns about potential abuses by private military partners.

The researchers have also highlighted the need for prudence when deploying AI tools, particularly with regard to who they are being used against. They argue that the use of AI against another tech-savvy country like Iran would have a different perception than its use against West Bank residents. The use of AI tools could also invite enemy groups to use the tools against the IDF and Israeli citizens.

Col. Uri, head of the Data and AI Department, Digital Transformation Division, acknowledged these concerns and emphasized the importance of the human element in the use of AI technology. He stressed that the goal is to enhance operational effectiveness and efficiency, not to replace people. He also highlighted the need for building a collaborative culture that fosters responsible and transparent use of AI technology.

The IDF’s adoption of AI technology presents both opportunities and challenges. While it has the potential to enhance operational effectiveness, it also raises important ethical and legal questions. The IDF’s emphasis on building a collaborative culture that prioritizes responsible and transparent use of AI technology will be critical in ensuring that these tools are used effectively and ethically while minimizing the risks and unintended consequences.
