A helicopter crashed on Bird Island in South Africa after an unsecured cardboard box containing a penguin slid onto the pilot's control lever, causing the aircraft to roll and land on its side.

A bizarre incident occurred on January 19, 2025, when a helicopter crashed on Bird Island off South Africa's Eastern Cape due to an unsecured cardboard box holding a penguin. Fortunately, the pilot and three passengers on board were not injured in the accident.

The helicopter was conducting an aerial survey flight when the incident occurred. Before departing, a passenger, referred to as a "specialist," requested that they transport one of the penguins on the island back with them. The pilot agreed, and the penguin was placed in a cardboard box.

The passenger seated to the left of the pilot held the box in his lap and secured it with his hands. However, when the helicopter reached an altitude of around 50 feet, the cardboard box slid off the passenger's lap and onto the pilot's cyclic pitch control lever. This caused the helicopter to roll to the right, and the pilot was unable to recover.

As the aircraft descended, the main rotor blades struck the ground, and the helicopter landed on its side, about 60 feet from where it had taken off. The aircraft sustained substantial damage, but the pilot, passengers, and the penguin were all unharmed.

The incident report highlighted that the penguin being transported in an unsecured box was not in accordance with safety protocols. "The lack of secure containment for the penguin created a dangerous situation. The absence of a proper, secured crate meant that the penguin's containment was not suitable for the flight conditions," the report stated.

The report emphasized the importance of adhering to established safety protocols and compliance with aviation safety procedures. It did not specify whether the pilot would face any consequences for the breach of protocol.
