In a 24-hour period, 13 police officers were wounded in shootings across 4 states. Attacks against police have been on the rise in 2021. According to the FBI, 73 officers were intentionally killed in the line of duty. Consequently marking a 58% increase when compared to the 46 officers intentionally killed in 2020.

Arizona

9 officers were shot while trying to rescue a baby from abduction in Phoenix. All 9 officers survived, and the infant was rescued. However, the mother, and the suspect did not survive the incident. It is believed the suspect may have been the father of the child.

Maryland

Two police officers were shot responding to a call of a suspicious male with a gun near Baltimore. When the patrol car arrived, an incident unfolded leaving all three wounded. Medical response teams airlifted the wounded officers, and suspect, to a near by hospital where they are in stable condition.

New Mexico

A New Mexico State Police supervisor arrived to a call regarding a woman who had locked herself in a bathroom. Upon attempting to investigate, the woman’s associate rammed his Cadillac into the officer’s patrol car, and the pair fled the scene. In the ensuing chase, the State Police supervisor was wounded by gunfire after disabling the getaway vehicle. The suspects fled on foot, but were later captured. The officer is recovering from his wounds.

Pennsylvania

A SWAT officer was shot while serving a warrant in Philadelphia. As police arrived to the third-floor apartment, the suspect fired two rounds through the wall, hitting one member of the SWAT team. However, the officer’s ballistic vest stopped the round from entering the body. The suspect led officers on a short rooftop chase before finally being detained.

These attacks all occurred over a 24-hour period last Friday, and serve as a solemn reminder of the danger law enforcement officers face each day while performing their duties.
