Airman Killed, Five Injured in Vehicle Accident at Malmstrom Air Force Base

An airman was killed and five others were injured in a vehicle accident at Malmstrom Air Force Base, with the cause under investigation.

An airman lost their life and five others sustained injuries in a tragic vehicle accident at Malmstrom Air Force Base, Montana, as confirmed by the 341st Missile Wing on June 29. The identity of the deceased airman has not been disclosed publicly. According to officials, the initial crash resulted in fatal injuries to one airman and harmed three others, with two first responders also getting injured during their response to the incident.

"The cause of the accident is currently under investigation, and we are taking all necessary measures to ensure the safety of our personnel and to prevent similar incidents in the future," stated a news release from the wing. “The safety and wellbeing of all our Airmen remain our utmost priority, and we are extending support and assistance to those affected by this tragic event.”

Details regarding the circumstances leading to the crash and the nature of injuries sustained by the first responders were not immediately available. The five injured airmen were promptly transported to nearby medical facilities, though their current medical conditions have not been publicly disclosed by Air Force officials.

As of June 5, the Air Force Safety Center reported a total of 19 airmen fatalities in motor vehicle accidents during Fiscal Year 2024. This figure marks a decrease compared to the 37 fatalities recorded in the previous fiscal year and 22 in Fiscal Year 2022.

Col. Dan Voorhies, commander of the 341st Missile Wing, expressed condolences and emphasized the importance of supporting the affected personnel during this difficult period. "Each of our Airmen are amazing and vital members of our team," Col. Voorhies stated in a released statement. “We will need time to grieve for our teammate that we lost and for our injured members to heal both physically and mentally. Our focus right now is to ensure that all of Team Malmstrom receive the support they need to navigate through this challenging time.”
