“The policy and rule, now in effect, are morally repugnant and incongruent with the Gospel, which the faithful are commissioned to share throughout the world (Mt 28:19),” Broglio wrote. “Moreover, the new DOD policy and VA rule fail to incorporate basic conscience protections, thus creating First Amendment pitfalls for military commanders and VA employees.”
The archbishop also noted that the decision could have a negative impact on the mental health and well-being of veterans who may be struggling with the aftermath of war and other traumas. He stressed the need for compassionate and holistic care for veterans, rather than simply providing them with access to abortion services.
