US and Iraqi forces conduct joint raid, killing Islamic State leader Jassim al-Mazroui Abu Abdul Qader and eight senior leaders, with two US service members injured.

A joint operation conducted by US and Iraqi security forces has resulted in the death of Jassim al-Mazroui Abu Abdul Qader, the leader of the Islamic State terrorist group, along with eight other senior leaders. The raid took place in the Hamrin Mountains in Salahuddin province.

Pentagon spokesman Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder confirmed the operation, stating that "the raid resulted in the death of multiple ISIS operatives." Ryder also reported that two US service members were injured during the raid and are currently receiving treatment. Both soldiers are in stable condition.

Iraq's Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani announced the success of the operation on social media, praising the "heroes of all our security forces" for their role in eliminating the terrorists. Al-Sudani reaffirmed Iraq's commitment to pursuing and eliminating terrorist groups, stating that “there is no place for terrorists in Iraq.”

The joint operation comes weeks after the US announced its plans to withdraw its anti-ISIS military mission from Iraq by next year. The agreement between the US and Iraqi governments is expected to result in the departure of approximately 2,500 US troops from the country by 2026.

Recent US strikes have strained relations between the two countries. In January, a missile strike against the leader of an Iranian-backed militia in Baghdad sparked outrage among Iraqi officials.

The identities of the other fighters killed in the raid alongside Abdul Qader will be announced after DNA tests confirm their identities, according to al-Sudani.
