A severe storm system brought heavy winds and rain to metro Atlanta on Sunday, leaving at least one person dead and thousands without power. The storm caused widespread damage, including downed trees and power lines, and placed medical staff on high alert at the Clayton County Jail.
According to authorities, a tree fell on a home in northwest Atlanta, killing a man who was lying in his bed. The victim, who has not been publicly identified, died at the scene from his injuries.
The heavy winds also caused a tree to fall on power lines at the Clayton County Jail, causing a several-hour power outage that impacted inmates on breathing machines and other critical medical equipment. Medical staff were on high alert during the outage, but power was restored around 10 a.m.
The storm also caused widespread power outages, with Georgia Power reporting over 107,000 customers without power at one point. Georgia EMC reported over 68,000 customers without power, although that number had decreased to around 40,000 by late morning.
In addition to the power outages, the storm caused significant damage, including downed trees and standing water on roads. Several roads were impassable, including Mount Vernon Road at Mount Vernon Place in Dunwoody.

The storm system has since moved out of the area, but colder air is expected to move in behind it, bringing falling temperatures and cooler conditions for the rest of the week.
