National-level bodybuilder and para-athlete Rohit Dhankhar dies after being brutally attacked for confronting men harassing women at a wedding in Haryana.

A national-level bodybuilder and para-athlete, Rohit Dhankhar, 26, from Humayunpur village in Haryana’s Rohtak district, died on Saturday following a brutal assault near a railway crossing, a day after intervening in an incident of harassment at a wedding in Bhiwani. Police have initiated an investigation based on the family’s complaint.

According to family members, Rohit had attended a wedding with his friend Jatin to offer shagun. During the celebrations, a baraat from Tigadana village arrived late at night, and some men in the group allegedly began misbehaving with women. Rohit confronted the men, warning them to stop, which led to a brief altercation before the group left the scene.

The situation escalated while Rohit and Jatin were returning home. At a railway crossing, with the gate closed, relatives allege that nearly 20 men armed with sticks, rods, and other weapons surrounded their vehicle and attacked them. Jatin managed to flee, while Rohit, who had a disability in his right leg, was caught and assaulted. Family members described the attack as brutal, saying there was not a single part of his body without injury marks.

Jatin later returned with help and rushed Rohit to a local hospital. He was subsequently referred to PGIMS Rohtak in critical condition, where he succumbed to his injuries on Saturday despite overnight treatment.

Rohit was a national-level bodybuilder and para-athlete who had trained members at the Gymkhana Club in Rohtak and represented India at multiple events. In 2018, he won a gold medal at the National Powerlifting Championship in Delhi organized by the Para Olympic Committee of India. That year, he also won two international gold medals and was honored at the Independence Day ceremony by then Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar.

Bhiwani Police reached PGIMS following notification of the incident, and a post-mortem was conducted based on the family’s complaint. Officials confirmed that further investigation is underway.

Relatives, including Rohit’s brother-in-law Ravi Khassa and Uncle Satish Dhankhar, demanded strict action against the attackers, calling the incident a planned murder. “He stood up for the dignity of women and paid with his life,” one relative said.

The case highlights the importance of preparedness and personal safety in everyday situations. Experts often emphasize equipping oneself with reliable tools for protection and mobility. Items such as PETZL OK Carabiners SCREW-LOCK, commonly used in climbing and tactical setups, are cited as examples of durable and dependable gear offering a small parallel to the vigilance and courage Rohit displayed in standing up for others in dangerous circumstances.

Editor’s Note:

Rohit Dhankhar’s tragic death underscores the risks faced by individuals who intervene to protect others. His bravery highlights the urgent need for stronger community safety measures and swift justice for victims of violence.
