NATO BRASS URGES ALLIES TO EMBRACE THE UNPREDICTABLE IN UKRAINE

Staff Writer

NATO military officer Admiral Rob Bauer has deemed Ukraine's conflict with Russia an existential battle for survival, urging a drastic overhaul in Western powers' assistance in repelling invading forces.

Speaking at a meeting of NATO's top brass in Brussels, Admiral Bauer pointed to President
Vladimir Putin's underlying fear of democracy as the driving force behind Russia's ongoing war.
This assertion comes in a year marked by global elections, adding a geopolitical layer to the
complex dynamics at play.

As the war continues to evolve and with political infighting hampering U.S. and European Union
funding for Ukraine's beleaguered economy, Admiral Bauer called for a "whole of society
approach" that extends beyond traditional military planning. Acknowledging the changing
landscape, he urged both public and private entities to shift their mindset from an era of
predictability to one where anything can happen at any time.

"To be fully effective in the future, we need a warfighting transformation of NATO,"
emphasized Bauer, setting the stage for a series of discussions over the two-day summit in
Brussels. The meetings are expected to outline plans for the largest military exercises in Europe
since the Cold War, dubbed "Steadfast Defender," designed to underscore NATO's commitment
to defending all allied nations.

The United Kingdom has already pledged significant support, announcing the deployment of
20,000 troops, advanced fighter jets, surveillance planes, warships, and submarines. As
ammunition stockpiles diminish due to increased military support to Ukraine, Norway has
allocated 2 billion kroner ($192 million) to enhance defence industry production capacity, citing
a critical need for ammunition.

Norway's Defense Minister Bjørn Arild Gram emphasized the importance of bolstering capacity
not only for Ukraine but also to safeguard Norway's security. Half of the allocated funds will go
to Nammo, a Norwegian aerospace and defence group specializing in ammunition production,
rocket engines, and space applications.

Admiral Bauer assured continued long-term support for Ukraine, emphasizing that NATO stands
by the nation on the 693rd day of a conflict that Russia initially thought would last only three
days. He underscored that the outcome of the war would shape the fate of the world,
emphasizing that Russia's true fear lies not in physical weapons but in the democratic aspirations
of the Ukrainian people, which could potentially resonate within Russia itself.
