Iran Accused of Meddling in US Election, Hacking Trump Campaign

Staff Writer

The FBI has accused Iran of attempting to interfere in the 2024 US presidential election by hacking Donald Trump's campaign and trying to spread stolen information.

The FBI has revealed that Iran attempted to provide Democrats with stolen material from Donald Trump's campaign, marking the latest incident of foreign interference in the US election ¹. This move is seen as an effort to undermine public confidence in the election's integrity and stoke discord in the United States, aligning with Iran's security interests.

Iranian operatives allegedly hacked the Trump campaign and tried to disseminate internal communications. They also attempted to access the Democratic presidential campaign but were unsuccessful ¹. Several media outlets received stolen information in July but declined to publish it. For instance, Politico received emails from an anonymous AOL account containing a research dossier on Ohio Sen. JD Vance, the Republican vice presidential nominee ¹.

The FBI disclosed that Iranian operatives offered people associated with the Biden campaign information stolen from the Trump side. However, there's no evidence that anyone responded to the emails ¹. Morgan Finkelstein, a spokeswoman for Kamala Harris' campaign, condemned the foreign interference, stating that the campaign cooperated with law enforcement after being informed of the malicious activity ¹.

Despite the lack of evidence, Trump falsely claimed that the Harris campaign was caught "illegally spying" on him ¹. This allegation references the FBI investigation into potential coordination between the Trump campaign and Russian operatives in the 2016 election ¹.

US intelligence officials believe Iran's goal is to create discord and undermine public confidence in the election ¹. This isn't the first time Iran has been linked to election interference; in 2020, officials uncovered a covert influence campaign aimed at undercutting Trump's reelection prospects ¹.

*Russia Still Considered Primary Threat*

Although Iran's actions have garnered attention, the US government considers Russia the primary threat to the election's integrity ¹. The Justice Department recently announced two criminal cases exposing Russia's efforts to influence the election. These cases involve Russian operatives funneling millions of dollars to a Tennessee-based content creation firm to produce pro-Russia videos and generating AI-created content on bogus news websites ¹. Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco warned of a "more diverse set of actors" threatening elections, acting more aggressively in a polarized environment with disruptive technology.
