A nine-year-old boy was rescued in France after being confined in his father’s van for over a year, leading to serious charges against the father

A nine-year-old boy has been found and rescued in eastern France after allegedly being kept inside his father’s van for more than a year, in a case that has stunned the local community.

Prosecutor Nicolas Heitz said the child was discovered on Monday in Hagenbach, close to the Swiss and German borders, after a neighbor reported hearing noises coming from a parked vehicle.

Police forced entry into the van and found the boy naked, curled up in a fetal position beneath a blanket, surrounded by rubbish and near human waste. Authorities said he was severely undernourished and unable to walk after being confined in a seated position for an extended period.

The child told officers he had not washed since 2024.

According to investigators, the father claimed he had placed the boy in the vehicle in November 2024 to “protect him,” saying his partner intended to send the child to a psychiatric institution. However, the prosecutor stated there was no evidence or medical history to suggest the boy had any psychiatric issues before he went missing.

The father has been detained and is facing charges including preliminary kidnapping. His partner, who denied being aware of the situation, has been charged with failing to assist a minor in danger and released under judicial supervision.

The incident has shocked residents of the small village. One neighbor, identified as Danielle, described the case as “devastating,” saying she had never noticed anything unusual and found it difficult to believe what had happened.

Authorities said the boy’s 12-year-old sister and the 10-year-old daughter of his father’s partner have been taken into the care of social services.

Investigators also found that friends and relatives believed the boy had been placed in a psychiatric facility, while his school had been told he had transferred to another institution.

This case highlights the severe consequences of prolonged child neglect and isolation, raising concerns about oversight systems and the importance of timely intervention to protect vulnerable children.
