Ukraine Expands Strikes on Russian Territory, Hits Military Airfield and Halts Public Transport

Staff Writer

Ukraine expands its strikes on Russian territory, hitting a military airfield in Lipetsk region and engaging in ongoing fighting in Kursk region, as the conflict escalates and draws international support.

Ukraine launched a drone strike on a military airfield in Russia's western Lipetsk region, injuring nine people and halting public transport, in the fourth consecutive day of Ukrainian assaults on Russian territory. The attack targeted a facility storing glide bombs used by Russia to target Ukrainian troops and cities, according to Ukraine's General Staff.

The strike follows a surprise incursion by Ukrainian troops into Russia's neighboring Kursk region, where fighting continued for a fourth day. Russian air defenses intercepted 75 drones overnight, including 19 over Lipetsk region, while Ukrainian security services downed a Russian helicopter in the Kursk region.

The US and EU have backed Ukraine's offensive, with the EU's foreign affairs spokesperson stating that Ukraine has the right to defend itself and hit enemy targets on its own or Russian territory. The conflict has raised concerns over potential disruptions to Russian pipeline supplies, causing a jump in European natural gas prices.

Russian authorities have declared a federal emergency in the Kursk region, with people fleeing their homes amid reports of Ukrainian advances deep into Russian territory. The Ukrainian operation has been seen as a boost for Ukrainian army Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi, who has faced criticism over his leadership.
