Craig Ballentine, a 33-year-old man from Cookstown, Co Tyrone, has returned home to Northern Ireland after being arrested in Dubai over a negative Google review of a former employer.
Speaking to *The Irish News* on Thursday, Mr. Ballentine confirmed that his “travel ban was lifted today,” adding, “Just to let you know I’m on the plane.” He expressed relief and joy after a challenging few months, saying, “It has been a manic week.”
Mr. Ballentine, a care worker, was arrested in October in the UAE after allegedly posting a non-abusive review about the dog grooming business where he previously worked. Although he was released from custody, he was prohibited from leaving the UAE until the case was resolved.
Just last week, Mr. Ballentine shared his disappointment about being unable to return home for Christmas. He was fined and told his next court date would be on February 25. However, his circumstances changed this week, allowing him to finally leave the UAE.
Speaking to the BBC before his flight, Mr. Ballentine said, “Reality hasn’t really kicked in yet. Once I return back and I see Dublin outside the plane window, that’s when I will be relieved.” He described the experience as “an exhausting journey” for himself, his family, and his friends.

Despite his return, it has been reported that Mr. Ballentine may need to return to Dubai at the end of January for another court hearing. For now, he plans to rest and prepare for Christmas celebrations with loved ones, saying, “It’s coming up to Christmas, so now I hope to return and rest for a day or two, then get prepared to enjoy the festivities.”
