Holy fuckin’ shit, what did I just watch?! This soft reboot of DC’s infamous Suicide Squad is absolutely mind-blowing.

James Gunn delivers us a film that is utterly sure of itself, and its story. The way the entire plot is woven together is something to behold. Warner Bros. finally has an A+ superhero movie on their hands, and it couldn’t be more violent, crude, lewd, and horribly perfect.

The Suicide Squad follows DC villains who have been captured and are told to perform dangerous black-ops missions in austere locations, guaranteeing shortened sentences if they succeed. Gunn’s vision is a more concise and clear view of how the Suicide Squad is utilized in the comics, and it’s evident this is a love letter from Gunn’s childhood as an avid comic reader.

I loved this movie. I had fun from the moment it started with Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues” to its end credits. Each character is thoughtfully crafted to hold their own on-screen with a development that is fleshed out (unlike the previous Suicide Squad), and real connections you care about when they’re abruptly taken away.

Character come to life (and death)

Oh yeah… A LOT of characters die. That’s another point I have to commend Gunn on; he allows the viewer to genuinely care about the characters presented on-screen, so when they die, it is powerful, and most times, you go, “oh fuck, oh no!”

While speaking of characters, I have to say that this is the most polished Harley Quinn we have seen to date. There is one particular sequence with Harley that is crazy phenomenal toward the middle-end.

As a whole, each time Margot Robbie is on-screen, she commands it. She is the beautiful psychopathic maniac we love about Harley in animated shows and comics. She is Harley Quinn.

Idris Elba & John Cena are the pillars of this film; they deliver their performances with genuine grit and wholesome humor. It is truly beautiful to watch these two characters grow from the beginning to the end and how their arcs play off each other. After this film, they are standout characters and will likely have a more substantial following for their comic book characters, and will likely pop up across the DCEU.

Also, I love Polka Dot man… he’s just fucking awesome.

Another point I have to bring up is the incredibly gruesome violence that is such a welcomed change of pace in a superhero flick. Most of these movies want to cater to the general audience, but James Gunn said “fuck that!” and just fanboyed out in order to craft his beautifully graphic masterpiece as he wanted.

Prepare yourself for blood, violence, and magnificently brutal scenes that take you to the edge of your seat and remove the breath in your lungs.

All in all, I have to say that this movie is nearly perfect. 9.8/10
